First and formost they need to resign Matt Hasselbeck to 1 or two more years and get a young quarterback to back him up and be his successor. Second they need to get Brandon Mebane signed then worry about the other 20 free agents on the team. More as it comes in. This was not a big surprise to me, as I knew that they were pretty good friends on the team and because I knew that Urlacher is a leader that will stick up for almost anybody on that team. The big question is whether or not Urlacher will be able to continue with that frustration against the Packers, and other players and people who have doubted Cutler, even through the lockout.

I don't think Urlacher is going to stop being upset until he knocks a few heads around. He is that kind of guy. The lockout will be a setback for him and for most of the other Bears players. They will not be able to train as hard or get ready for the season in the same way, but they will still have the fire and passion that came out of that NFC Championship game.

To answer the question, yes. The Bears have a lot of momentum and anger and they are not the type of team that will let that go away just because they can't play football right away. The Packers should know that the Bears are going to rip them apart and eat them alive the first time we play them. The Bears won't let this momentum fade. Urlacher and others will be ripping heads whenever football comes back.TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-75644726504140001212011-05-16T20:25:00.000-04:002011-05-16T20:25:50.677-04:00Sidney Rice?

I recently saw an article on Bleacher Report about the Bears needing to sign Sidney Rice. I was intrigued by this and decided to read what the writer had to say. They make a valid point that the Bears need a receiver who has the speed, like most of our receivers do, but also has the ability to fight for the ball. Johnny Knox was phenomenal last year, but he still had times when he could have made catches if he had gone up and fought for the ball. Sidney Rice is a receiver who has proven that he can do that in the past. He won't take over Knox' position, but he will work with Knox to make a great tandem of receivers for Jay Cutler to throw to. I have watched Sidney Rice as a Viking and he rapidly became a well-known receiver in the league. It is good to see that he worked well with Brett Favre, because Jay Cutler is the same type of quarterback as Brett Favre was. Too many of Cutler's interceptions were due to receivers not going up for the ball or fighting for it at all. That gave Cutler a bad wrap and made people question his decision making. Signing Sidney Rice would be a huge help to Cutler.

With Knox and Rice leading the Bears' receiving core, I think Jay Cutler could have his breakout season. I have said it before that I thought he would anyway, but this will only help him. He will work hard this off season and try to become a better quarterback and overall football player. He surprised a lot of people with his quickness last year, and I think he will improve that as well as the things he needs to improve to be a good quarterback.

The Bears sent a great message to Cutler by drafting an offensive lineman in the first round. They can send an even better message by signing a good receiver and well-known guy like Sidney Rice. It will show Cutler that the organization has faith in him and trusts him to lead the team. It shows that they are going to build around him and make a team out of his talent. That is a huge confidence booster for Cutler and will help him become a better player.

Long story short, signing Sidney Rice would be a very smart thing to do. I don't know how they have to go about this, because the lockout is still happening. All I know is; if the Bears get Sidney Rice I will be very happy and I'm certain Jay Cutler will too.
The big thing on a lot of American's minds is whether or not football will be back by September 11th. This year is the 10th anniversary and will be even more special now that the man who planned the attack is dead. Sports are a great way to cope with the feelings that these events bring to people. Having football back will be a must. The way sports and patriotism collide was shown even last night at the Phillies game as they simultaneously started chanting USA USA USA. Having football back will bring people together in one big crowd and will show how much patriotism our country still truly has.

Saying that we want football is not going to solve anything. The owners and players need to realize how greedy both sides are being and come to an agreement. Most of the issues aren't even that important, granted I don't know all the details. My personal opinion is that this greediness is just going to make people mad and not get anything solved. If the people who went on this mission were greedy, someone would have gotten hurt, but they knew that together they can accomplish more. When the two sides try to work together and not argue about everything they will go far and make an agreement in no time.

If both sides truly look at the story and think about how terribly greedy they are being, they will lay down the gloves and make an agreement. Right now it's a fight over who can have more control, but if they meet in the middle they can get a lot more solved.TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-76528614165698607532011-05-02T12:36:00.003-04:002011-05-02T15:13:14.728-04:00Monday Morning Falcons Hangover: Special Post Draft / Post Osama Bin Laden Edition
There's an Odd Couple joke somewhere in here.

It has been awhile since I have written. To be honest, there has not been a lot to write about. The NFL Labor Mess cast a pall over all football proceedings and made thinking about football not even remotely fun for me.

Plus, I have spent much of the last two months doing everything I could to get back into school. Long story short: I had to take some time off because of personal reasons, but because I was out longer than a full academic year, I had to reapply and there were grade change issues involved, and it was pretty much a big mess.

All of that work paid off though, as I’m back in school, have only a few classes until I attain my degrees, and will be able to enjoy one last football season at UGA (looking to be a HUGE bounce-back season for the Dawgs, hoping SEC East winners!) before the real, real world beckons.

Draft Hangover

First thing’s first: anyone ripping the Falcons for trading away five draft picks for Julio Jones is WRONG.

The Falcons traded away four draft picks for Julio Jones: this year’s 2 and 4, and next year’s 1 and 4. They swapped 1’s with Cleveland, moving up 21 spots from 27 to 6 to take what many experts believe is the best receiver in the draft.

So, getting that out of the way, was the four draft picks the Falcons traded to Cleveland “too much” for a player who will change the way every single team can defend the Falcons offense, opening up the field not only for Roddy White, but for Tony Gonzalez, Harry Douglas, Michael Turner, and the new kid, Jacquizz Rodgers?

Um, no.

The Falcons were 16th in the league in total yards last year. They were 31st… THIRTY-FIRST in offensive plays of 20 yards or more. Roddy White had his worst YPC averages of his career (even when he was trying to catch errant throws from the DogKilla). Matt Ryan had the worst YPC average of his career, and the second worst of any QB in the playoffs.

The Falcons need defensive help, it is true, but the Falcons offense scared NO ONE last year. Part of that is because of Mike Smith’s play not to lose philosophy of football, and part of that is the fact that they possessed no receiver to really stretch the field (White isn’t a burner) or take double teams away from White. I mean, it is absolutely amazing that Roddy White led the NFL in receptions last year with all of the double teams he faced.

Now, the Falcons possess a burner receiver in Julio Jones who will stretch the field. He will take double teams off of White, yes, but even more than that, Jones will do so much more.

Jones will keep opposing defenses from dropping one or both safeties into the box to stop the run, meaning Michael Turner will only be seeing the normal seven or six men in the box. Imagine Turner running into the second level of a defense unfettered. Can you say rampaging bull?

By keeping the safeties honest, Jones will open up the middle of the field for Harry Douglas, the Falcons’ slot receiver and Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta’s HOF TE. Think about it: once again, TG will be single covered by a smaller, slower LB like in the earlier days of his career, no bracketed coverage with safety help. First downs to the TE all… day… LONG.

Jones will also open up a more creative ability to approaching the Falcons offense, allowing for more screen passes to succeed with Jacquizz Rodgers creating mismatches on LBs without having to worry about safeties who cheated-up.

To put it simply, Jones makes Atlanta offense much like Green Bay’s offense, or Indy’s offense, or Arizona’s offense from a few years ago.

He makes other teams fear the Falcons. When is the last time anyone said that?

As for the defensive help that the Falcons need, if you don’t think the team will fill their pass-rushing defensive end need (Ray Edwards, Charles Johnson) in free agency, y’all haven’t paid attention to how this team has done business in the last three years.

The fact is, the Falcons could afford to give up four draft picks for Julio Jones, who is faster than AJ Green, who is a better blocker than AJ, and who, by all accounts, is a better team leader than AJ (and it pains me to say that as a loyal Bulldog), because the Falcons only had two glaring holes to fill, not four or five.

And in the end, Julio Jones, like Larry Fitzgerald or Megatron, is a slam-dunk, sure-fire pick. None of the DE’s in the draft were sure-fire picks. NONE. Most of them were Big-10 players, and we all know you are far more likely to get a bust d-lineman from the Big-10 than any other conference.

If you had the chance three years ago to draft Megatron, would YOU trade four picks for him?

You of course answer “HELL YEAH!”

So stop killing the Falcons for doing the same damn thing.

As for the rest of the Falcons' draft, it was excellent if you choose to forget they took a kicker in Round 6 when TE Virgil Green was still on the board. Rodgers told reporters he models his game on Warrick Dunn, and it shows on tape. Plus, he has mad hands. I was finally happy with the picks that Jerry Angelo was making and was actually complimenting him on twitter for making smart decisions, then in the third and fifth rounds he made huge mistakes. First, lets talk about the good though.

In the first round, the Bears had their sites set on an offensive lineman from the start. They knew that was the need that needed to be addressed first and took care of it nicely. They draft Gabe Carimi; you can read the post I wrote about him here. I was very happy with this pick and look forward to seeing Carimi grow as a player. Jerry Angelo gets my approval on that pick.

In the second round, the need to be addressed was well known again. We needed a defensive lineman. We took one. We took a player from Oregon State named Stephen Paea. I look forward to him growing on the Bears. He already looks like a good player from the scouting reports I have seen and looks to have a bright future. He will probably play a similar role to what Corey Wooton played this last year. Now Wooton has moved up and Paea will get a chance to play every once and awhile, but will probably not be a regular starter for the Bears yet.

In the third round, things got a little messy. Some people thought the Bears should have taken a wide receiver, some thought that a safety or cornerback should have been taken. A safety was taken and a lot of Bears fans were upset. I was not happy with this pick, but understand it a little. Overall it is a stupid pick, because we are letting all of those safeties that we have drafted in the past pass by without giving them a chance to become good NFL players. This is the first pick that I did not agree with Jerry Angelo on and he didn't give me much confidence in him with the next pick.

In the fifth round, the Bears selected yet another late in the draft quarterback. They tried the same thing last year and ended up letting him go. If you are going to draft a quarterback, don't wait until the high talent is all gone. I don't think they should have been drafting a quarterback in the first place, but at least draft one that will make a name for himself one day. Right now the Bears have Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie, and I'm happy with them. Most likely, Jerry Angelo was thinking that he didn't want to have to deal with signing a third string quarterback and he saw this kid, so he went out and got him. I don't think that's a very smart thing to do in a draft, but it's Jerry Angelo and we couldn't expect him to have a perfect draft.

Overall: I give the Bears a C on this draft. The first two picks were As but the last two were Ds to level it out to a C.

Jerry Angelo did better than he does most years, but he still needs to draft better or else the Bears are never going to win another Super Bowl.

I was also looking at twitter and the guy that seemed to be wanted the most was Gabe Carimi. After looking him up, I joined in on the beg for Carimi tweets. When the Bears announced they would draft him, I was immediately happy. The best part was Jay Cutler's fiance Kristen Cavallari tweeting that she was happy the Bears drafted an offensive lineman. She doesn't want her man to be hurt like he was this past season, and I find it really funny that she actually tweeted it.

Onto a more serious note, I really like what this kid has done. He is a great pass and run blocker. Today, the offensive line coach for the Bears, Mike Tice, said that Carimi would stay at tackle and would not be moved the the guard position which they also need to fill. The Bears would have liked to take a guard, but finding this kind of talent with the pick they had was too much to pass up and we also needed a tackle. In my opinion, this was a great pick and will play out well for the Bears in the future.

On a side note, when the Lions picked Fairley I almost peed my pants and I'm almost certain that Jay Cutler DID pee his pants. Having Fairley and Suh on the same defensive line is going to be a tough challenge for this growing offensive line. I hope Jay Cutler doesn't die the first time we play the Lions.
This doesn't guarantee that football will be back in full swing soon, but it is a good sign. Now the NFL has me excited for next season, so I'm going to do a little preview of what might go down at Hallas hall.

The first thing is that they are still upset about everything that happened in that NFC Championship game. Urlacher was extremely mad after the game, and I guarantee that he is going to come into this season hitting and hitting hard especially against the Packers. Jay Cutler was ridiculed and you can read more about that on some of my other Around Pro Football posts like the Bears hate post or the I Support Jay Cutler post. The Bears have received a lot of hate for what they did last year and I think that is going to fuel them this coming year.

I think Matt Forte is going to do really good things this year. Last year he was good and a lot better than the year before, but I still think he can play a lot better than he has shown lately. His rookie season proves how good he CAN be, if he tries hard enough. I think he will try hard this offseason and get a lot better and perform better and help balance this team out. The run game is very important for the Bears, and he is leading that running game. If he has a great season, it will change the whole outcome of the season for the team.

Jay Cutler is going to be fueled by the hate on him, and is going to work hard. I have no doubt that he will work hard and try to improve his footwork and other skills during the off season. When he heads to training camp all of his personal issues will be over and he will just be working on timing with his receivers. He will no doubt be a lot better this year than he was last year.

The offensive line will get a boost from the draft which starts this Thursday. Draft news is always available on ESPN Chicago but I didn't feel like overloading this site with draft information. With the offensive line being better, the Bears and Jay Cutler will be a lot better.

The defense doesn't need much work, but the little work needed will be taken care of in the draft. The defense has always been the strong point of Bears teams and this year it looks like that trend will continue. The core guys are coming back and I think Corey Wooton, the rookie who knocked Favre out, will be a lot better and improve his game a lot this off season.

Overall the Bears will have an equally great, if not better season next year.
The Bears regular season schedule just recently came out and I figured looking at each game and predicting what could happen would be a nice thing to do. The Bears have a tough beginning, but overall a good schedule.

Week 1
The Bears start with a home game against the Falcons. Last year the Falcons had a great regular season, but fell to the super bowl champion packers in the playoffs. Expect them to be good this coming year, too. Matt Ryan is the real deal and if Roddy White is out there playing well they are dynamic. The Bears are going to have their hands full, but we also have a good quarterback. Jay Cutler is going to be playing with a vengeance this whole year and it will be easy to see from the first time he touches the ball. This is going to be a tough game for both teams. Look for the game to be low scoring and for the quarterbacks to show that these were the top two teams in the NFC last year for a reason. This will be a low scoring game and I don't think I can pick a clear winner at this point.

Week 2
After playing the Falcons, the Bears schedule is not going to get easier. They are once again going to face one of the premier quarterbacks in the league. This time they are playing the Saints and Drew Brees. The Saints were a little off last year and fought with the Falcons the whole season. They ended up getting upset by the Seahawks in the playoffs, but they are still a good team. They are mostly the same team that won the Super Bowl two years ago. They can easily do that again. This game is not going to be easy. The Bears defense is going to have to make a stand and force a couple of turnovers so that our offense can stay in this game. This game could easily be won or lost by the Bears depending on the effort from the 3 phases of the game.

Week 3
The Bears return to Soldier Field for week 3 and face off against the Packers. The Bears players are going to have a lot of their mind for this game and are going to play with a lot of vengeance. I know for a fact that the Bears players hate that they lost to the packers. The Bears players are going to be hitting hard and playing well in this game and I have no doubt that the Bears will win.

Week 4
The Bears finally get a break from tough teams when the Panthers come to Chi-town. The Panthers were not very good last year, and will get the number one pick this year. They may or may not get immediate help from their pick. I don't think they will good enough to compete completely with the Bears in this game. It might be a struggle, but I think the Bears will pull through this one.

Week 5
In week 5, the Bears play the Lions. Every year the Lions get better and better and look like they might have a chance to compete. They have a good quarterback and receiver combination that the Bears need to shut down. If our defense plays well and keeps Stafford under control, the Bears can easily win this game with a few good plays from Cutler. That is a big if, though and I think its very possible the that the Bears lose to the Lions. It's also very possible they win, so don't take me wrong.

Week 6
The Vikings come to Chicago in week 6 and this could be a very good game. The Vikings didn't do much last year and the Bears had almost no problem sweeping them. The Vikings looked good at the end of the year with their rookie quarterback and will make waves in the NFC North this year. This game is another one of those pivotal games against our division where we can easily lose or easily win the game. I'm thinking the Bears take care of business.

Week 7
The Bears travel to Tampa Bay in week 7. This is a game that can easily be won by the Bears. Execution is all that needs to be done. As long as the Bears stick to their gameplan and play like they should this game shouldn't be a problem. The problem is, last year we had trouble against the teams that were easy to beat and gameplan against. I'm not extremely worried about this game, but it could easily spiral out of control and make me want to smash my tv with a hammer.

Week 8 is a bye week for the Bears.

Week 9
The Bears came off the bye week very well last year, and I think they will do the same this year. This year they play the Eagles right away on MNF. This is going to be a very interesting game. The Eagles are a good team and Vick is a very good quarterback. The Bears defense was able to shut him down last year, and they better be able to do the same this year. The Bears defense is not the only thing that needs to show up, the big reason we beat them while they were sizzling last year was because Jay Cutler had a great game. He needs to step up this year also and win this game for us.

Week 10
The Bears play the Lions for the second time and this time it is in Chicago. I'm thinking the 4th phase makes a huge difference in this game. The Bears will be coming off a tough game win or lose from the previous week, so they might be a little too loose for this game. I do think that they will win this game handily and really impress some people in the media with a win against the Eagles and then big win against the Lions.

Week 11
The Bears start their play against the AFC in week 11 when they play the Chargers. The Chargers are always a good team and always come out to play. The Bears are going to need to stop Philip Rivers from dominating the game and keep him from killing the Bears. On the other side of the ball, the Bears will need to step it up on offense to compete with the high power offense the Chargers have.

Week 12
The Bears will play the Raiders this week, I think the Bears can win this game without a problem. The Raiders did have a burst of energy last year and were looking very good. I think the Bears can beat them as long as the defense doesn't allow their good running backs to take advantage.

Week 13
The Chiefs and Bears were two of the surprise teams last year and this year they will face off. This is an interesting matchup that I think the Bears can win. This could go both ways, the Chiefs are a good team with a good young quarterback. They have the core people needed to win games, but I still like the Bears to win this game.

Week 14
The Bears finish their AFC stint playing the Broncos. Tim Tebow will probably be playing quarterback which is cool, because I like to watch him play. I don't think the Bears will have a problem shutting him down and winning this game, though. This will be interesting because Jay Cutler will be back in Colorado for the first time since the trade two years ago.

Week 15
The Bears have a rematch of the one playoff game they won last year against the Seahawks. I think the Bears are going to win this, but expect the Seahawks to come out wanting this game a lot. The Bears will want it too, but the Seahawks were not happy getting beat in the playoffs and might play with major vengeance. I still think the Bears can get the job done.

Week 16
The second Bears and Packers matchup is this week. This will be interesting. The Bears aren't going to play with as much vengeance as they will in the first game against the packers, and might end up losing this game. I hate to predict a loss especially against the packers, but the packers are a good team and I would not be surprised if we tie them in the season series.

Week 17
The Bears finish with their final division game against the Vikings. At this point, the Bears might not need to play any of their starters. I hope that is the case and we can just mosey through this game. I would love for the Bears to win, but I would love it more if that was unnecessary to win.
When I heard this at first I was thinking it would be a cool experience for the players and that they would really enjoy it. When I got to thinking about it more, I thought about how much jet lag they will have. The biggest problem is, what if they don't win? The losing team is going to look at the game and trip and think it was pointless, which it is. Why is the NFL trying to reach out to European countries? They don't like the sport, so just let them have their football which is soccer and we will have ours. This one game in London thing is just making a mess for the NFL, the players, and the coaches. As a coach you have to leave time for your guys to catch up on sleep, leaving you with less time to prepare for the next week. The more I think about it, the more I hate the fact that the Bears have to play in England this year. I mean no offense to England or other European countries, but this game is so unnecessary. There are other ways to reach out and one game with different teams every year isn't going to help the fanbase very much. I don't like this at all and I won't be looking forward to the game; losing would put way too much of a dent in our season. This game is not going to be cancelled; I'm going to have to live with this game. This game is a must win, though, because a loss means we go back to Chicago with not very many days to prepare and needing help. If the Bears lose this game it could throw them off their rhythm and perhaps ruin their season, they have to win.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
-------------------------------------------
I had to watch this with a heavy heart, and yet laugh a little. The late Dave Duerson is a big part of it, and he will forever be in my heart as a great Bear and man who died too early.

TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-41178615440089335782011-04-16T20:30:00.002-04:002011-04-16T20:30:00.739-04:00Mike Vick Goes for Two, Maclin Loses to MonoThe voting for the Madden '12 cover has come down to a final four battle. On one side, the number three seed, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, is taking on the number nine seed, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. On the other side, the number one seed, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, is taking on the number ten seed, Browns RB Peyton Hillis. If Vick wins the overall voting, he will be the first player to be on the cover of Madden twice, and in two different uniforms. Vick appeared on the cover of Madden 2004, and fell victim to the Madden Curse, breaking his leg in a preseason game. While some Philly fans have been wary about voting for Vick due to concern for the curse's reach, Vick pointed out on his Twitter account that there is no curse for being on the cover twice. Others argue that an injury would be negated by the lockout, should it extend into the regular season. Whatever your position on the curse, it would be good to have an Eagle on the cover of the newest Madden game. The last Eagle to grace the title's cover was Donovan McNabb on the Madden 2006 game. McNabb was later injured in a game against the Dallas Cowboys, and was replaced by backup QB (and Rutgers alum) Mike McMahon. The Eagles ended with a 6-10 record that year, so vote as your superstition dictates.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is currently recuperating from an illness similar to mononucleosis. Though he lost 15 pounds, the receiver says he's gained about half of it back, and plans on joining Michael Vick and other key Eagles players in southern New Jersey for Vick's informal practices, meant to keep the team sharp. Let's hope it doesn't aggravate anything, or cause any injuries, especially while locked out of the team health plan.Xanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10453887778176133216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-76208798330238242142011-04-11T18:32:00.007-04:002011-04-11T19:59:57.834-04:00Bears Draft Picture<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 183px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcHPFyt1lKrkD57U-vg09Ti8bMLbkqLQWlmSsiWATk00i55LtG4tH-VMVhTDOzl4mH_mEv5bO0sDjHAOYjsEtp8KYM8E9SyiRP_HOxX_48Sn0CdBbzoFWX6Cq1Ma8RJZ8Ze0QYiYFFaheO/s400/draft.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594471465515924130" />
I've always said that the worst thing about the draft is that you could have a good regular season, get far in the playoffs and not win the Super Bowl and then you have a bad pick. Basically, you tried very hard to play well and you got pretty far, but not far enough and you get stuck with a bad pick. The Bears had one of those seasons, they played well in the regular season and caught a few breaks. They got to the playoffs and caught another break in playing Seattle; they moved on to the NFC Championship game and lost. That is what put them in the awkward position of we got far in the playoffs, but didn't win anything and now we have a very low pick in the draft. They still have options at the position they want, though. In my opinion, and the opinion of Jeff Dickerson (ESPN Chicago Bears writer) who you can follow on twitter @ESPNChiBears the Bears need an offensive linemen. This was the big issue on our team last year, and can easily be fixed by drafting a linemen. You can read my post about one option, Mike Pouncey, here: I used Jeff Dickerson's mock draft and who he picked for the Bears to make this post. You can read and check out that mock draft here:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 194px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3sAH-n-c5lz-KLuUH25a4oQBl_RxDJp-OC3O5wKCrvqUjCuT8-itwroMDedK1YqXIJ_m_7OKcWmkprdWdH1z6_I52tbQP5HLWtbawX3ZMvlrv71w7fJVP3SVT7o8uMaIr3jQGi9GwODJu/s400/dereksherrod.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594475064004189458" />

Derek Sherrod played offensive tackle for Mississippi State last year, and this year he is entering the draft. I will admit that I don't know very much about him as a player, because I don't watch his school at all. I do know that the Bears need an offensive linemen and this guy will probably be the best they can get with their late pick. The Bears are obviously going to take whatever is the best in that position at the time, but I'm guessing this will be the best they can get.

With Sherrod playing tackle he can't really take over Garza's place like Pouncey would have because Sherrod isn't a guard. If the Bears can make him into a guard for the beginning of the season, that would be great. A guard is what we really need, and most offensive linemen can make the switch easily from tackle to guard.

The big problem with depending on a rookie to take a starting place on the team is that there is a lockout. This means that workout and training time for the rookie with the team will be limited. If the Bears want to make him into a guard, they will need some time. He won't be able to just jump in and play a different position then he has played his entire life. If he has played guard before and can move there easily this won't be a problem. This is just a minor setback and I'm sure he will do fine if the Bears pick him.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
------------------------------------------
Cute Kid.
TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-59625457276516487282011-04-09T23:29:00.008-04:002011-04-10T19:55:49.431-04:00Cutler Speaks<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiptkWFAHMVlehWtA9L5naoyRyprAPwsQ7nfErNfq2izdATuyF3QYnCgI209v4gvktqell_YwmIN0R_QkpPcPtY1R-b0GEua1c6vFPQD0XHUBiYAc4QfjdjikgMGHwmlgVP9718mMgCHM-N/s400/jaycutler..jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593799766240669714" />
My last post covers a lot of what this post will talk about, but I will say a lot of it again anyway. Jay Cutler received a ton of hate when he left the NFC Championship game with a knee injury. He let things cool down and stayed away from the media for a couple months and just recently commented on it for the first time. The specific quote I want to focus on is this, "I think I've been through a lot here in Chicago, and I would have loved to play." (thank you for the quote)

Cutler specifically said that he wanted to play, which I never doubted. I'm sure Cutler was begging to be out there on the field, but the trainers were telling him to stay on the sideline because they knew that he couldn't truly play well with that injury. The haters forget that after the injury first happened he did go out there and played a series. He didn't play well and he was probably in pain, after that the trainers probably said that he had to sit. Cutler and the Bears made the right decision in not playing him. This controversy will help make the team stronger and help make Cutler a better quarterback.

Another thing I liked about what Cutler said was this: "Those are the guys you are with a lot of the time," Cutler told the Sun-Times, "and those guys didn't flinch. I've got to thank them for that." (again, thanks ESPN Chicago) It was talking about when Urlacher and Kruetz stood up for him. I loved what Urlacher said and you could tell that he was mad at the people talking about Cutler. Maurice Jones Drew better look out the next time the Bears play the Jags, because Urlacher will be gunning for him big time. Urlacher didn't just say what he said because he had to or was supposed to, you could tell that he meant what he said and Jay was very right to thank him for that.

I really liked how the two veterans stood up for Cutler, it shows how well this team sticks together. I think this whole situation has and will bring the team together. The hate on the Bears has really brought the team together and joined them in one goal: make the haters eat their words. The Bears are going to be good next year and Cutler will play a lot better and be really impressive.

Another thing I like about the Cutler thing is that one of his biggest haters, Tim Hasselback, was on ESPN talking about it. He was saying good things, too and the whole time I'm watching I was getting more and more mad. He was one of the people saying bad things and one of the people that Cutler was addressing and now he is saying that waiting and now saying what he said was the perfect thing to do. This just makes me dislike Tim Hasselback even more than I already did, at least Trent Dilfer wasn't there also.

Like I said in my last post, Cutler is a guy who needs motivation and all this crap talk on him will motivate him to be a great quarterback next year and hopefully bring us back to the NFC Championship game and win it this time.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 324px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEA9N0uws3BttF-xbpFo90d4oTmarV4YKLCnlTs8QHfRCMkFA0M2i0jZ97VpGA2_tbDzJFS-oo-koQXcHdYdRMaYbQzsnBpRXuSN4F6GzrAi4cdWwqsqjixKVnGhG6pTli2UvIAFXycsuE/s400/jaycutler2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593815254687069826" />

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
--------------------------------------
These "fans" can go die, RIGHT NOW.
TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-32986697730301204332011-04-07T20:30:00.000-04:002011-04-07T23:12:28.161-04:00Vick Steps Up as a Leader, Castillo Talks in TexasMichael Vick stepped up in his role as Eagles quarterback this week. Vick announced that he would be leading workouts and drills for the offense in southern New Jersey. This is a big step for the Eagles, and says a lot about Vick and his commitment to the team. By running these practices, Vick will (hopefully) avoid the problems that plagued Ron Jaworski's Eagles during the stoppage in the '80s, and will cement him as the team's leader. Vick's decision to do this makes his place on the team a more permanent and responsible one, showing he cares about the success of the team beyond his one-year contract extension. This is good news for Eagles fans and the organization, as Vick stepping up will serve to invigorate and unify the team. It also shows at least some good can come from this lockout.

Incentive from Vick could prove key to keeping the Eagles in playoff-hungry form, as the lockout is beginning to threaten their bonuses. Several Eagles players are set to receive substantial workout bonuses to induce them into participating in voluntary workouts. Without these bonus incentives, some fear players will take the path Ron Jaworski related from the '80s, and will end up out of shape when the stoppage is over. Hopefully the QB taking the reigns will bring many into line with him, and will spur someone (hello Asante?) into doing the same on defense.

Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith visited the Eagles this week. While the draft may not be the best place to get a cornerback to start, Smith could do well backing up for Asante Samuel and whoever ends up on the otherside of the backfield (Nnamdi Asmougha, anyone?). Smith put up good numbers at the Combine, and had a couple of interceptions at Colorado, but generally wasn't on the QBs' preferred side. While this looks impressive, there is a big difference between how QBs operate in college, and how they work on the pro level. My pick, though I sound like a broken record, would be Muhammad Wilkerson to help bring new life into the Eagles defensive line.

New defensive coordinator Juan Castillo was in South Texas to discuss his roots as a Chicano and the work ethic he brings as Sean McDermott's successor. There was a lot of surprise when Andy Reid announced that the new DC would be an offensive coach, but Castillo said that it was not the first time his abilities were doubted. The new DC discussed his struggles in his early football career and the feeling of having a police motorcade escort the bus he rides on through Texas to play the Cowboys.

Follow on Twitter: @asprice18Xanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10453887778176133216noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-9699879387237298792011-04-05T20:30:00.000-04:002011-04-05T22:06:28.975-04:00Condolences for Avant, Jaws Speaks His MindBefore anything else, please send your thoughts and prayers to Jason Avant and his family. His father died Saturday of injuries sustained in a car crash in New Jersey. Jerry Avant lost control of his Chevy Blazer in Burlington County during the wet conditions and crashed on the opposite side of the road. The Mount Holly native was 51 years old.

If the labor dispute in the NFL is bothering the fan base in Philly, it sure isn't showing. With the annual draft party coming up at the end of the month, the 6,500 free tickets the team gives away have all been spoken for once again. While it's obvious fans don't want to get into the middle of a fight that isn't theirs, it will be interesting to see the draft this year and how the incoming players respond to the mess they will walk into after the draft is over.

With the draft in mind, Muhammad Wilkerson has been my favorite for a while now, and it's reported that the Eagles have been looking at his teammate, Temple safety Jaiquawn Jarrett. Despite the fact that Nate Allen should be back next year and he has a lot of talent at the position, after seeing his injury last season, it couldn't hurt to bring Jarrett onto the team. If nothing else, Jarrett could backup for Allen and possibly replace him one day.

In Kevin Kolb news, the Bengals are the newest team in the sweepstakes. With Carson Palmer about as excited to play in Cincinnati as Kolb is in Philly, this deal might be one of the most promising ones yet. If Palmer was to shake things up, it could make the Bengals more desperate to make a three-team deal. Not that I'm excited about benefiting from another team's desperation, but at this point that's what's driving Kolb's potential stock through the roof, and that's never bad for the Eagles.

Meanwhile, in Eagles alum news, legend Chuck Bednarik was released from the hospital Thursday morning. Bednarik was hospitalized for shortness of breath, but was cleared with minor health comments. Ron Jaworski has caused a stir with his comments to Philadelphia Inquirer writer Jeff McLane regarding the lockout. Jaworski voiced his concerns with the sense of a work stoppage, given the game's popularity, and the sad state of disabled players' medical benefits. He also spoke on the timing of the return of the Arena Football League team, the Philadelphia Soul, to play after a three-year hiatus following their 2008 championship. The Soul make a return sans Bon Jovi, with Jaws as part owner.

Follow on Twitter: @asprice18Xanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10453887778176133216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-67235769866744907532011-04-04T18:31:00.006-04:002011-04-04T19:54:27.666-04:00I Support Jay Cutler<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 184px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3nwkc5qXK8adpq5uYz4Muub6TV5ki2ZJ-RXp_JqH-yh1Vmx9KGY1B4svIlF6ok7jwEvh3ZdFGgAJHt_72Zh8EBlUvVG5vx_RPcyhNKIZPBzS7hJSJ3D7fM3VlXTP-px-sGKqMNmYX30Ne/s400/cutler1new.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591873390638574546" />
Since there is a lockout and the Bears draft options aren't very exciting I thought I would talk about Jay Cutler. He received a ton of hate during the NFC Championship game which is totally unnecessary. A torn ligament in a knee is legit, I would know. I tore my MCL in high school and too be able to not be screaming in pain the whole game it shows how tough he is. The pain is constant and terrible. Yes, they would have a lot of pain killers available for him, but it was a better choice to just put Hanie out there and hope for the best. This isn't the last year we want to use Jay Cutler, we want him for a long time so playing him there would have been a stupid mistake even if Cutler wanted to play.

I think this adversity will make Cutler stronger. He is a guy who needs a lot of motivation to work on his game, this could be the great motivator that all Bears fans have been hoping will happen. I know that Bears haters say that Bears fans themselves were burning his jersey, but those aren't real fans. Real fans who know the game know that him not playing didn't make a huge difference and that we still need him in the future. I plan on going to training camp and hope to see him out there with better footwork and that he will be on page better with his receivers.

I was entertained by the fact that some Bears fans wanted to see what Hanie could do in that starting role. If Jay Cutler never works out, I think Hanie might be the next good quarterback for Chicago. I don't think he is ready yet, though. The way he played reminded me of the National Championship game last year. Colt McCoy went out and Garret Gilbert came in and made a little comeback. It wasn't enough to win the game, but it put the thought in peoples head, this kid will be golden next year and in the future. Hanie put that same thought into my head, this kid will be golden in the future. Replacing Jay Cutler right now is not a good plan, but keeping Hanie is a good plan. He is a great backup.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 277px; height: 182px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmI-kILe5g1HfPWIqSjn90cL49Wby0VU7ISB5vJGO2ynG3lJUaUQUh5EX3VwodbT1x8mlmqffOZ0XCNZ_LNFDJq-EswWTRwPEAkqN-P61zs9Y-kBt3FRkszmmuN3qaHuRDvny_dMLsM2V1/s400/cutler2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591878206193584226" />

Jay Cutler needs to not listen to the people like Trent Dilfer and Tim Hasselback who think they can judge him when he is still young. He should want to prove them wrong. If somehow they put fire and desire in his heart, then I would laugh. Jay is ready to come back and have a monster season. I can see the Bears winning the NFC North again, but I can also see them being in the middle or just below the Packers. I'm being honest that the Packers are a good team, but we can beat them and we have. Jay Cutler needs to step up this offseason and learn that if you work hard in the off season it will pay off in the regular season.

If Jay finds the passion to get better this year will be a monster year for him, if he decides to listen to what the haters say and tell himself that he is a loser, we might have to put Hanie in sooner than wanted. This coming year for the Bears all depends on how Jay Cutler handles all this adversity, and I think he will do well with the adversity and make them eat their words. I SUPPORT JAY CUTLER- a phrase that REAL Bears fans can say proudly.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
------------------------------------------------

It's amazing how many great Bears youtube videos I can find.
TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-51596631591639217662011-04-03T15:52:00.006-04:002011-04-03T16:29:52.667-04:00Mike Pouncey and the Draft<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 271px; height: 186px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyRWs2cFy5e0VuuMhzS5JEvRdT947eTxpm0A5fgEp_Avs1OY3RCPVBtgR8GC6CzMWnjp2EjgRywAU50HsvIa5O1Lc9DY-2ZqJwaacml69KZUlS-B0JHF0rjJ90Z9cY0MXKNCJKjrMBcJ1x/s400/mikepouncey2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591450421618328226" />

The Bears are in need of a linemen of some sort. The official word is that they are interested in defensive linemen, but that might just be a front so that nobody steals what they really want. I think they need an offensive linemen, and Mike Pouncey fits exactly what they need. He can play both guard and center which will be very helpful as our center gets older, but is not ready to leave.

The Bears are probably going to sign Olin Kruetz to a one or two year contract when the lockout is over. If they draft Pouncey, Kruetz will stay at center while Pouncey plays guard for a year, then when Kruetz is ready to retire or to just instruct Pouncey we can make pouncey into our center. I think Pouncey and the Bears will mesh well together and the fact that he can play both center and guard will be helpful in introducing him to the NFL.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 201px; height: 251px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1SPjqm4fASDJtJ9GmxcjMjvsjmkmIRo2Ocia1tx3X-_EeI1jXIxq9shmLifzRtVLkhfdQB8O1utnvfbKOJTdDdc5IrjNwaPs4qV3mvYB1aA9iIbfszHXVylJbrt9TdiMsAcluGxiWC7wr/s400/mike+pouncey.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591455136112929074" />

Mike Pouncey has a lot of talent, it might be hard for the Bears to get him with the 29th pick in the draft. If the Bears get him, he will be used well and will fit our team well. The offensive line was the major problem last year, and drafting Pouncey might help a little.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
-----------------------------------------------

These guys have the best Chicago sports based songs, subscribe to them on youtube, their name is theretarcrew.
TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-57534583003635482772011-03-30T16:00:00.001-04:002011-03-30T16:00:00.717-04:00Ben Watson Receives Praise

In ESPN's latest positional power rankings, Browns tight end Ben Watson earned a single solitary vote as the seventh-best tight end in the NFL. Hopefully you're more worried about Chuck Bednarik. For those in the latter category, he's doing better, and is expected to be released from the hospital as soon as possible. His heart is fine, according to his doctors, and he'll hopefully be making a full recovery.

In (maybe not so) current Eagle news, Quintin Mikell is still unsure if he will have a role on the Eagles' defense next year. Mikell is a free agent, but has the disadvantage of being unable to shop himself around, and the further impediment of wanting to stay in Philadelphia. While he did not have a stellar year, his numbers were solid, he put pressure on offenses when it was needed and he was the Eagles' tackle leader. In the "he's got Philly heart" section of his resume, Mikell says that despite being 30 years old, he keeps himself in top playing condition, a habit learned from Philly beloved Brian Dawkins. With the proper draft picks (cough, cough, Muhammed Wilkerson, cough, cough) and good free agency moves (Nnamdi Asmougha, cough, cough), the Eagles could stand to keep Mikell on the (hopefully) beefed up defense, making the squad very formidable. The best part is that his desire to stay could mean a discount for the Eagles, giving them the ability to spend that money elsewhere.

Segueing nicely into more former Eagles news, number 20, good old Brian Dawkins has joined Twitter. I know he plays for the Broncos now, but I don't think there's anyone in Philly who didn't love him while he played here (or even still do). Give him a follow @weapon20xx.

Finally, Michael Vick has advanced on to the second round of voting for the Madden '12 cover. Vick defeated Houston's Andre Johnson, and received 76 percent of the total vote. Vick will face Pittsburgh's Hines Ward. He actually caused himself to be benched for kickoff returns for awhile because he was too good. Lovie Smith was hoping that he would get more yards off the kickoff without him out there at all instead of them kicking away from him and not getting all the way to the 20 yard line. This past year he was put back on to receive the kickoff as a surprise in the beginning and then Lovie realized how good he was and is and kept him there for most of the kickoffs.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 261px; height: 193px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2HMoSTM1zO0vsFCSgwg3jvqOFAyzPKtK704KJzTO_fYa82cYI_MECCdbxG0SW_hWlazcKRY-W179V5WZAwMHXukTv2HWst6uzRI9yFvPncSNc0HwmFKRWtOH7QKqI0KpERNLyZALNJuNL/s400/0001.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588869442905016610" />

Even though he is great at returning kickoffs, the thing he is the best at is returning punts. Just this past year he had 3 returns for a touchdown off punts. He is the best punt returner I have ever seen. Yes, DeSean Jackson is good and other fast receivers but nobody beats Devin Hester. Devin Hester is a monster and a beast.
Devin Hester will not be beat.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
----------------------------------------------
I chose this because its a collection of Hester's best returns. He's feeling better, but remains in serious condition as doctors check to find the cause of his dizziness and shortness of breath. Doctors say Bednarik's heart is as healthy as his playing days, but it's still worrying that he's still in the hospital. Eagles Nation can only wait and hope he recovers.

As the lockout continues and the players vie for support from the fans, LeSean McCoy made a bad choice and flaked on an appearance in Wilkes-Barre, in upstate Pennsylvania. The appearance was arranged by an entertainment company owned by LeSean's brother, LeRon. McCoy was supposedly paid an a $2,500 advance from the Wilkes-Barre nightclub Bentley's, but failed to show for the March 11 event. He tweeted that he had suffered a flat tire, and Bentley's offered to send a car, which McCoy turned down. After numerous attempts by Paul Domowitch to contact LeRon, or anyone with knowledge of the circumstances, the article was published. This finally elicited a response from LeRon, who said, among other things, that the two-seat car Bentley's offered to send was not enough for McCoy and his personal security. Whatever happened, it can't be good to blow off fans like that, especially now.

The talk about Kevin Kolb won't go away any time soon, especially with Andy Reid doing some shameless promotion by calling him a quarterback that can win a championship. Now Charley Casserly, former NFL general manager, has thrown his hat into the ring by saying he would take Kolb "100 times" over Auburn QB and highly ranked draft prospect Cam Newton. While Kolb's few starts aren't enough to count him out, and he has shown himself to be an able QB, he and Newton have essential the same playing time in NFL playoff games, and Kolb, a fourth-year vet, has yet to play a full season. While the same can be said about the Eagles' current starting QB, Kolb hasn't had enough playing time to prove himself one way or another. At this point, speculation about how either will do is a little premature.

In draft news, the Eagles have received two compensatory picks for Jason Babin and Sean Jones, who both departed for free agency last season. While these picks are not very high, two seventh round picks, the Eagles seem to be hoarding draft picks, and may do well because of it. The Eagles recently worked out University of California's Chris Conte, a safety. Keep the eye on defense, Andy.

To get through the lockout, some players have gotten creative. Desean Jackson was recently hired as a production assistant on Jimmy Kimmel's talk show. I suggest tuning in to see how that one goes. Please, Commish, let's bring football back and stop the madness.Xanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10453887778176133216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-65555579315113623792011-03-25T00:58:00.009-04:002011-03-25T16:21:35.288-04:00New Rule<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 370px; height: 278px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3vYt3U8yXu08CjczqbnJtkGopMLC892mmTHrRUpo_9oWYVCVm5rH1v4z0XFYh2SGr7HwQHutikQBXHANowo2KO6bUGzTp4JoyfIb31-LYMmJ8BBHDlXfJ8i4kDzLWHxa3FwJ0yBd7AdsL/s400/dhest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587877603499851922" />
The rules for the kickoff have just been changed, and they are going to change the whole entire game. The kickoff spot was moved from the 30 yard line to the 35 yard line and it will change a lot in the game. The owners say that it will make the game safer, by not having the high speed collisions that often happen on kickoffs. I don't think it will make it that much safer, now kickers will kick higher so that guys on their team have more of a chance to get down to the receiver quicker, which will cause more collisions. This is another example of the owners trying to say that they want the game to be safer, but then being hypocrites by trying to add games to the season and not caring about health care.

This rule will not only affect the kickers, it will affect the receivers and the Bears in particular. We all know that Devin Hester is one of the best kick returners in the league. Before this past year Hester wasn't receiver very many kicks, but Lovie Smith decided to start using him to surprise teams. This year was another brilliant year for him, he is the best. This rule change is going to hurt Hester a lot and the Bears.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbL1CypX572C2r9Lpn5VvNICfqED3tt5vl1yhcUpsPyoff7FvSKxktHKUdVuX8yaZzJM9QGAh7BDYHfuNU8afDyeuoxB5i_fgRuABa5ia4xygQjLSUGbF4TDzeA72k5n3RVSlV11fSj4Wk/s320/davis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587880047503779218" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2zMlnvD05uMa2b3A9Wr6olNI5V8OIpjM3pgDtG9i8aGft-6FAuyrEk-np9wuUa-WqjJCsJJ870m7SwNEYdxgMerTbz9Wt3pf_xheUd4AEq4JGw31BzJI8QjnGxv7CEy2PZ8z2Vmmh9pUw/s200/dmanning.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587880209558475794" />

The Bears are not a great offensive team. The offense of the Bears is not consistent and I will admit that. They need help from the special teams. The big thing about a kickoff return is that the other team scores a touchdown or a field goal and because your receiver is good you stay in the game by scoring another touchdown. The Bears need kick return touchdowns. This is going to hurt them a lot. A touchback doesn't help the Bears. They can't move down the field like a really great offense does, but they have good kick returners that get them further than a touchback position, or get them a touchdown. Without the factor of Hester, Davis, and Manning returning kicks for touchdowns the Bears aren't as scary on special teams. Yes, Devin Hester can still return punts, but kickoffs are big because its after the other team has just scored and then you get a chance to score. The Bears are not nearly as good as they were this year without the Hester effect in full swing.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
------------------------------------------

In honor of Jimmer's last game in the NCAA and at BYU, he scored 32, but it was not enough to move his team along. I hope he has a good NBA career, and I LOVE this video.

TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-6689462089435004032011-03-24T20:30:00.003-04:002011-03-24T22:06:32.286-04:00Chuck Bednarick Hospitalized, Lockout ShenannigansChuck Bednarik has been admitted to a Bethlehem-area hospital after feeling short of breath. While this doesn't sound like that much of a problem, there has to be more to it, as Bednarik was still listed as being in "serious condition" as of this afternoon. This news comes has many in Eagles Nation worried, as many grew up (like I did), hearing stories about "Concrete Charley" (or "Cement Charley" after a few beers) and his tenure as an Eagle. Bednarik is a true Philly guy, playing football for Liberty High School in Bethlehem, then UPenn in Philly before being drafted by the reigning 1948 NFL champions. As a member of one of the most dominant periods of Eagles history, Bednarik helped propel the Eagles to the first back-to-back shutout championship in NFL history, a record that is still held by the Eagles. Bednarik is a celebrity in Eagles nation, being the last of the 60-minute men, from a time when players played both offense and defense. The former Eagle became a legend after laying a near career-ending hit on the Giants' Frank Gifford. While Bednarik has had his ups and downs with the Eagles, famously for supporting the New England Patriots during Super Bowl XXXIX due to a feud with owner Jeffery Lurie. Still, it's hard to hate Bednarik, responsible for some of the best football in Philadelphia and who had a hand in two NFL championships for the Birds. His recovery will hopefully be swift.

The NFL lockout has affected people in different ways. Fans have taken sides, generally with the players or against the NFL and the players' association. Now the players, with varying degrees of frustration, have begun to speak out, and not always in the best way. Recently, Minnesota Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson said that the NFL was like modern-day slavery. The comments, as any comment regarding slavery, was received very negatively by many, including Green Bay Packers' running back Ryan Grant. While many voiced their disagreement with Peterson's comments, but Peterson has also had his supporters. Rashard Mendenhall was chief among those supporting Peterson, tweeting that there are parallels between the slavery of colonial America and the NFL's practices. Also echoing Peterson's words was Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver. Immediately following the comments, Weaver received criticism from all corners of Eagle Nation, with fans and beat writers weighing in on the controversy. Yesterday, Weaver tweeted that he would be doing an interview explaining his words, and apologized if he offended anyone. Later, he tweeted a retraction for using the term slavery. The term is a strong one, and shouldn't be used to describe the working conditions of anyone making...well, any money. The players need to refrain from making these kinds of faux pas, otherwise it will erode the fan support players now enjoy.

Moving on to happy misfortune, the Dallas Cowboys were fined for illegal offseason activities. Echoing the fears of many that new coaches need to get in sync with their players soon, the Cowboys' new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan, tried to do just that. Before the lockout began, the league was in a "dead period" where the actions of players and coaches are limited. Four other teams violated the rule and have been fined by the NFL, the fact that the Eagles were not one of these teams could be a good sign. Despite having a new defensive coordinator, Juan Castillo has been with the team and knows the players. Hopefully, this lack of breaking the rules is a vote of confidence in Castillo and his ability to pick up when the season begins. We'll find out when these fellas figure out how to split $9.3 billion. I have a few suggestions.Xanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10453887778176133216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-15564440036390902682011-03-22T20:30:00.001-04:002011-03-22T21:15:15.480-04:00The Kolb Market Heats UpSince Eagles head coach Andy Reid's comments that the Eagles will be listening to offers for backup quarterback Kevin Kolb, the buzz about teams in the Kolb sweepstakes has exploded. The team has gotten at least one offer for Kolb that comes with a first-round draft pick, likely from a high-pick team. The Eagles seem to have gone from "interested" to "how can we get the most money" about Kolb, with Reid marketing the QB like no one's business. Since trying (and failing) to re-sign QB Matt Hasselbeck, the Seattle Seahawks have made no bones about their desire to go after Kolb when the market opens up again. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said that the Seahawks tried to go after Hasselbeck, but that the money wasn't there, which sounds like an issue on Hasselbeck's end. Given the lockout, the market after the stoppage is over, and Seattle's stated interest in either Kevin Kolb or Cam Newton, holding out (or whatever derailed a re-sign) probably wasn't in Hasselbeck's best interest, though it may have boosted Kolb's stock considerably.

Another team in the mix for Number 4 (oh, the puns), is the Minnesota Vikings. Head coach Leslie Frazier has been very vocal about getting a quarterback, though his idea is a fresh-start draft pick. The obvious target for the Vikes would be Cam Newton, as they have shown interest in him already, though he may not be available by the time the Vikings pick. Unless they trade up several spots, they likely won't be willing to lay it all down for Kolb until after the draft is done. One thing is for sure, if Frazier and the Vikings management hesitates, they could lose both their leading QB candidates. At this point, I think Frazier might even entertain Favre's obligatory offseason musings of a comeback. But not for long.

As the lockout continues, it seems you can catch your beloved Philadelphia Eagles at various area gyms, since the lockout denies the players use of team facilities. While this can get taxing after a while on the players' bank accounts, one hopeful thought is that if all of the players are staying in top condition, maybe Ron Jaworski's predictions of doom won't be as inevitable.

There has been more talk of the Eagles' (and Reid's) interest in Temple's Muhammad Wilkerson, and several defensive pick ups would definitely be a good thing, especially with news that defensive end Brandon Graham will not be ready, should the season begin as scheduled, thanks to a torn ligament. Safety Nate Allen is expected to be ready to play, and the Eagles will need him to step up from his breakout rookie performance and not fall into a sophomore slump.

Lumping together Vick and NFL news, Philly's starting QB recently visited a Florida prison with mentor and advocate Tony Dungy. While there, Vick spoke to inmates and vowed to continue community outreach, lending to the (sorely needed) rehabilitation of his image. While the visit brought the obligatory "Mike Vick Goes to Prison!...As a Visitor" zingers, it also helped Vick's stock in public opinion, continuing to make the QB more acceptable as a marketable brand, despite the lingering hatred for him. Meanwhile, the NFL revised the kickoff rules (because nothing important is going on right now), setting the ball at the 35-yard line, with touchbacks being placed on the 20-yard line. Challenges have been revised, but there is a clause that teams will keep the third challenge, originally done away with, and all scoring plays are now subject to booth review. If only they could work out this whole labor dispute as quickly.

Follow on Twitter: @asprice18Xanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10453887778176133216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3377199341966355755.post-73968534472644699192011-03-21T18:29:00.010-04:002011-03-21T19:02:39.502-04:00Soldier Field<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 194px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioIL2F9dhbWX1ApbXspuTDIFwuAgFrlE7wEmUu1aHUWab4lXDACea_SSspCoqFVW4deGpULPw5usU9gDIMjDTOcpqeBHbQPc_1puOUt579BBtPKe14mCDUWyFHgZWzlojkO9XCB_prJtmt/s400/3-21-11+2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5586667319411758002" />
First I want to say that while other people are blogging about the lockout and can't find ways to be optimistic about the situation, I think that the best way to get through it is too just move on like it's a normal year. Yes, I did post about the lockout last time, but I probably won't again. I don't want to think about it, I'm ignoring the situation, because there is nothing I can do about it. I just hope we have football next year. Okay, my lockout rant of the day is done and on to the real topic I planned on writing about.

Soldier Field is terrible. I love the Bears and I would love to go to Soldier Field anytime during the season to see a game. The grass is the problem. While other teams and fields have switched to some kind of false field, the Bears remain firm in believing that our field should suck. Once again they have said that they won't change it this offseason. The problem is, it's not only hurting the other teams, it's hurting us.

The other teams complain and say that they can't play on such a terribly conditioned field, but the Bears have to play there too. Some teams complain that it gives too much of a home field advantage, but the truth is that our defense and offense probably play better on the road.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 195px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8j7HxAXSdMQtQ-qpbnG7CQ5rvl3aikZPx4iVqPLkVP1Y1PXBzeeQV5AKNRsKPMLwmDUKzSG-sdRz7pBzrwdPJBgHAOQ65RkaTjFENIVThveZgK5UKgaxKNh0YXXPZMRY5Xu1cqcaXGjAe/s320/3-21-11+1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5586667399156486242" />

While watching games at Soldier Field you see Bears players slipping and falling and you see players from the other team doing the same. It is equal. I agree that it is terrible, but there is not much you can do about it because they won't change it. I'm sure the players don't like it a lot of the time, but right now they don't have much say.

Our defense is deeply hurt by this. We have a very fast defense, but if you go too fast on the grass at Soldier you are going to slip. If you are playing defense and you slip it will probably cost you a touchdown. The Bears can't afford to stick with the grass the way it is now. The defense will be much better than they were before the switch and the offense will be better also. All too often you see Devin Hester or Johnny Knox slip on the grass and then not catch the pass, and the pass could possibly lead to an interception. The field conditions need to be changed.

Bears YouTube Video Of The Day
---------------------------------------------

I am a die-hard Bears fan I still find this very funny. The end is the best, the beginning is a little stupid.

TheChicagoFanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972669823640031953noreply@blogger.com0
